Case Study: Aidan McFadden – Building Skills and Confidence Through the SkillSET Project
Placement & Employment Success at Bishop’s Gate Hotel, Derry/Londonderry
Aidan McFadden joined Orchardville in October 2023 as part of the SkillSET project, bringing with him a strong interest in hospitality. Alongside his work with Orchardville, Aidan is completing a Level 2 qualification in Hospitality and Catering at North West Regional College. As his confidence and skills began to develop, the Orchardville team recognised that a practical work placement would offer Aidan the opportunity to apply his learning in a real workplace.
After discussing potential placements with Aidan, Orchardville approached the Bishop’s Gate Hotel in Derry/Londonderry. The hotel warmly welcomed the opportunity to support Aidan and offered him a 10-week placement within their hospitality team.
Aidan embraced the opportunity from day one. Throughout the placement he demonstrated enthusiasm, reliability and a strong desire to learn. He quickly gained confidence in a range of bar duties — from pulling pints and making cocktails to restocking ice and supporting customer service. He has also expressed a keen interest in learning to use the till, continuing to expand his skills.
Aidan’s positive attitude, professionalism and commitment impressed the team at Bishop’s Gate Hotel. His punctuality, politeness and ability to work well with staff and customers alike made him an excellent fit for the business. At the end of the placement, the hotel offered Aidan paid employment, recognising the value he brings to the role.
The Bishop’s Gate team have shared glowing feedback on Aidan’s performance, describing him as hardworking, meticulous and consistently motivated. Orchardville staff continue to provide ongoing support, checking in regularly to ensure Aidan is progressing well and feels confident in his role.
Aidan’s journey is a fantastic example of what the SkillSET project aims to achieve — helping participants build skills, gain experience and take meaningful steps into employment. His success shows the power of partnership between Orchardville, local employers and dedicated participants who are eager to shine.
