Case Study: Jonny’s Work Journey

From shy beginnings to a confident career path

Jonny joined Orchardville through self-referral while he was still at school. At the time, he was very shy, unsure about what he wanted to do after leaving education, and found social situations challenging. Although Jonny was actively involved in his local church groups and had completed a short school-arranged trial at EJ’s Café, he had no formal work experience and lacked confidence in his own abilities.

Discovering Strengths and Interests

Through Orchardville’s discovery process, it became clear that Jonny had a strong interest in working in a kitchen. With this in mind, the focus shifted to finding a small, supportive café environment where he could build skills at his own pace.

Orchardville approached The Café at the Museum, where Nikki and Gillian were enthusiastic about supporting Jonny with a longer-term placement. While Jonny was still at school, hours were agreed to fit around part-day release, ensuring the placement complemented his education.

Building Confidence Through Experience

It was during this café placement that Jonny truly began to flourish. With one-to-one support in the kitchen, he developed practical food preparation skills, built friendships, and even gained experience in customer service. Most importantly, Jonny’s confidence grew — both socially and professionally — giving him a strong foundation for his next steps.

Planning for Life After School

As Jonny entered his final year of school, it was agreed that college was not the right pathway for him. Instead, his day release would be better used exploring part-time employment in a structured, supportive workplace.

Building on previous success, Orchardville contacted McDonald’s Glengormley, where the team already had experience supporting inclusive employment. While the location required extra travel for Jonny’s parents, they recognised the value of the strong support network available. Jonny was keen to explore the opportunity.

A Successful Transition into Employment

Jonny began a 12-week working trial, training across a variety of roles including till work, drinks, fries, and with the aim of progressing into the kitchen. With the help of one-to-one buddying, Jonny thrived in the fast-paced environment.

At the end of the trial, Jonny completed an informal interview and was reassured that the role was secured. Shortly afterwards, he passed his driving test — a major milestone that gave him independence and allowed him to travel to work on his own.

A Future Full of Opportunity

Flexible hours were agreed, with Jonny working a minimum of three shifts per week, which suited him well. Today, Jonny is a valued and fully established team member at McDonald’s Glengormley. Supported through Workable, he works confidently in the kitchen, operates food stations, and continues to complete online training as he progresses his career.

Jonny’s journey highlights the power of early intervention, tailored support and inclusive employers in creating meaningful, sustainable employment.
