Jonathon’s Story

Jonathon M, 33 | Bangor | Day Opportunities

Jonathon is a funny, energetic and wonderfully bubbly person who has a natural ability to make people feel welcome. He has made many great friendships through Orchardville and loves nothing more than spending time with the people around him.

But music is where Jonathon really comes alive.

He loves singing and playing guitar and has performed at venues including Cockle Row Cottages in Groomsport with his friend. He is also a proud member of the Orchardville band, where he has continued to develop his guitar skills and confidence as a performer.

Finding His Passion

Jonathon’s love of music began when his granda bought him a guitar while he was at school. He taught himself how to play and quickly discovered that music was something he was passionate about.

After leaving Clifton School in Bangor, Jonathon attended college in Newtownards, where he developed important life skills including cooking and getting out and about in the community.

His love of performing eventually led him to Dublin to audition for The X Factor when he was around 20. Although the experience was nerve-wracking, Jonathon describes it as an amazing opportunity and one he will never forget.

Jonathon later joined Promote, where he particularly enjoyed spending time with his friends. When he heard that Promote was closing, he was understandably worried about what would happen next. He was delighted when Orchardville took over and has since embraced the opportunities available to him.

Learning new skills and building confidence

Jonathon attends Orchardville three days a week and takes part in a range of activities, including cookery, drumming, music and the band.

Through Orchardville, he is currently completing an OCN in DIY while volunteering at Restore in Newtownards. He particularly enjoys travelling there by bus with the group and has developed practical skills including using a drill, as well as learning about health and safety.

His involvement in the Orchardville band and drama activities has also helped Jonathon become more confident performing in front of others. At Orchardville shows and concerts, he is often right at the centre of the action, enjoying every moment.

He has also developed greater confidence in the kitchen through independent living and cookery sessions.

The Difference Orchardville Makes

For Jonathon, Orchardville is about much more than learning new skills. It is a place where he has built friendships, developed confidence and had opportunities to do the things he loves.

His guitar playing has come a long way, and the band has become his favourite activity.

“Coming to Orchardville is the highlight of my week. I love it so so much!”

One of Jonathon’s biggest goals is to become more independent when travelling. He is looking forward to starting travel training, which will help him develop the confidence and skills he needs to travel more independently.

Looking to the Future

Jonathon has plenty of ambitions for the future.

He would like to move into employment, particularly in a role where he can help and interact with customers. He would also like to complete OCN qualifications in Scamwise and ICT to build his confidence when using his phone and technology.

And, of course, music will continue to be a big part of Jonathon’s life. He wants to keep developing his guitar skills and has even expressed an interest in learning to play the piano!

With his enthusiasm, personality and determination, Jonathon is excited about what comes next.

His journey is one of growing confidence, discovering opportunities and finding the things that make him happy — and he’s only just getting started.
