Paul D’s Story

Paul D, 64 | Lisburn | Men’s Shed

Paul is a bubbly, sociable man who loves football, darts, pool and, as he puts it, “the craic”. A proud dad and grandfather, he also enjoys keeping active through running, spin classes, walks and regular gym sessions.

For Paul, joining Orchardville’s Men’s Shed has brought a renewed sense of purpose, friendship and belonging.

Finding a New Routine

Paul worked full-time throughout his life and was proud to provide for his family. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, he lost two jobs and found himself at home without the routine and social contact that work had provided.

With his family now grown up and living away, he experienced loneliness and increased anxiety, particularly when faced with things like letters he didn’t understand.

“Since I lost my jobs, I didn’t have any opportunities. I was at home, alone.”

Men’s Shed gave Paul somewhere to go, new people to meet and the chance to try something different.

Developing New Skills

Through Orchardville, Paul has taken part in volunteering, cookery, football and other activities. Through the VIP programme, he has volunteered at the Community Kitchen at Vineyard Church, where he learned to bake scones.

“At the beginning I needed a lot of staff support. Now I feel that I can bake the scones myself with a lot less support.”

One of Paul’s proudest achievements has been becoming captain of Orchardville Lisburn DFC.

“I feel that I have finally found my team at my level and I’m happy with that.”

Being part of the team has given Paul confidence, friendships and a real sense of belonging.

“Men’s Shed has provided me somewhere to go to reduce the loneliness and spend time with others. All the charity work and volunteering opportunities have really increased my confidence and taught me new skills.”

Looking to the Future

Paul has one clear ambition: to become a very good darts player!

And while retirement is on his mind, there’s one thing that needs to happen first:

“Retirement!!! But not until we win the league.”

For Paul, Orchardville has opened the door to new friendships, skills and opportunities—and helped him find a team where he truly belongs.

“It only took me 64 years to get there.”
